CIrcuits Workshop

This past February, our Community Outreach team organized a visit to Deerwood Elementary to conduct a circuits workshop with 5th grade students. The workshop focused on using model simple circuits to help students visualize open and closed circuits, and test whether objects in the circuit were conductors or insulators. Volunteers first used an Enegy Stick to demonstrate the difference between open and closed circuits by linking hards, creating a “human circuit! (the stick powered when all students were connected. Afterwards, students followed circuit diagrams and used lightbulbs/motorized fans to observe how these objects were powered through the circuit. Then, students used cardboard, a wood stir stick, and a penny and hypothesized whether the circuit would work if these objects were put in. Students then tested each object in the circuit, and classified them as insulators or conductors.These interactive demonstrations helped strengthen their understanding of simple circuits, and classify the components that affect a circuit.

By engaging students with circuits, we hope to spark a lifelong interest and curiosity in STEM fields, along with creating a fun experience in the students’ school day.
