ABOUT THE PROJECT
SEED is a non-profit educational and engineering development initiative based at Georgia Tech, supporting Deerwood Academy. Through the installation of greenhouse and the implementation of monthly STEM workshops, SEED aims to enrich the community by providing early engineering exposure, fresh produce, and an outdoor classroom environment with the long-term goal of expanding our reach and forming lasting connections between Georgia Tech and the community. ISsues we Tackle
Food insecurity
Food insecurity is a widespread problem across Atlanta. According to Emory Global Diabetes Institute, food insecurity is defined as "limited or uncertain access to nutritionally adequate food". This issue largely affects low-income areas in Atlanta, with a large number of low-income Atlantans living in food deserts, or areas with limited access to healthy food, especially fresh fruits and vegetables. To combat this, we aim to build a greenhouse at an elementary school, which, once up and running, can act as a source of fruits and vegetables for the school and the surrounding community.
Education Disparity
Education disparity is a term for the unequal access to educational resources and opportunities due to socioeconomic status and/or location. As Georgia Tech students, we wanted to support STEM education, teach kids about different career paths in STEM, and showcase the creative side of STEM. Right now, we do this by holding STEM workshops at our partner school, Deerwood Academy, that integrate with the curriculum to give the students hands-on learning to solidify the concepts they learn in the classroom. Additionally, we plan on getting the students involved in the greenhouse construction process to teach them about the engineering design process and important factors to consider.
A Message from our FOUNDER
The inspiration for Engineers Without Borders’ Atlanta project came from my contributions on the Ecuador project. While I was dedicating myself to helping a community in need abroad, I realized that there was a need in the community around me, right by Georgia Tech. I wanted to create a project where we could directly impact the space we live, work, and play in.

After reaching out to the principal at Deerwood Academy, we began to formulate our vision, focusing on providing fresh produce in a food-insecure area and engaging young scholars in STEM and urban agricultural practices, all while upholding tenants of sustainable engineering to create a greener, more bountiful future.

Our project consists of three key components which work together to accomplish our mission of providing for our local community. A self-sustaining interactive greenhouse will be integrated into the science curriculum at all grade levels, providing scholars with hands-on learning. All produce harvested through these programs will be available to students and the community. In addition to the greenhouse, we are implementing a series of STEM workshops focused on sustainable engineering practices to supplement grade-specific science standards.

We are so excited to work with Deerwood Academy to implement these ideas, but we cannot do it alone. We need resources and support from the people in our communities. Join us in feeding and educating our community through sustainable engineering.

Sincerely,
